What You Need for a Balloon Pumpkin

• 4 Balloon Animal Balloons (3 Orange, 1 Green or Brown)
• One Balloon Pumper

Making a Balloon Pumpkin

Step 1: Blow up the three orange balloons nearly all the way leaving about 3 inches from the end not blown up.

NOTE: Leaving space in the end of the balloon will allow the creator to safely twist and bend the balloon reducing the chance the balloon will pop. There is always the possibility the balloon will pop, so use caution to avoid injury.

Step 2: Tie a knot in the end of each orange balloon after blowing them up.

NOTE: After you blow up the balloon allow a small amount of air to escape to make tying easier.

Step 3: Blow the green balloon up 1/3 of the way and tie. This balloon will act as a pumpkin leaf and vine.

NOTE: If you only have a brown balloon you can blow up about 2 inches of the balloon and tie off both ends. It can be used as the stem of a Jack-O-Lantern.

Step 4: Take the first orange balloon and twist it about one third of the length from the balloon at the end with the knot.

Step 5: Fold at the twist and make a second twist.

Step 6: Twist the sections together at the twist and then tie of the third section to form the basis of the pumpkin.

Step 7: Repeat steps 4 though 6 with the second and third balloons, but incorporate them in the first balloon twisting together at the twist points for each balloon.

Step 8: Gently shape the balloons to form a pumpkin by “smashing” them down towards the ground to round out the shape.

NOTE: You can also gently pinch the balloons to help them keep the pumpkin shape.

Step 9: Take the green balloon and fold it in half and tie the ends together.

Step 10: Tie the green leaf to the top of the pumpkin.

Making balloon creations is a great deal of fun and encourages creativity. You can create glowing pumpkins using glow in the dark balloons, add faces using markers, or keep them simple as shown here. Have fun with your project.

This is a craft for children between the ages of 5 and 12. Older children may want to put their creative twist on it and add more details and decorations to the objects. Younger children may need assistance cutting out the shapes and assembling the mobile. Making a mobile is fun and can be used as a party decoration, home decoration, or given as a gift to a grandparent or other relative. The following will show a mobile with jack-o-lanterns, witches hats, and ghosts, but you can add other Halloween objects or simply stick to ghosts.

What You Will Need for a Halloween Mobile

Items will vary based on what you want your final mobile to look like, but here are some starting suggestions:

• Craft Foam (Black, Green, Brown, White, and Orange)
• Googly Eyes
• Foam Glue
• Scissors
• Twine, Fishing Line, or other String
• Wire Hanger
• Wire Cutters
• Pliers
• Markers
• Ball Point Pen
• Needle
• Stapler

How to Make the Pumpkins

Step 1: On the orange craft foam draw or trace a pumpkin shape using the ball point pen.

NOTE: You can freehand the pumpkin shapes or use a cookie cutter to trace the shape.

Step 2: Cut out the pumpkin.

Step 3: Use the black craft foam to create jack-o-lantern eyes, noses, and mouths to decorate each pumpkin.

Variation: You can simply make pumpkins if you do not want to make the jack-o-lanterns.

Step 4: Glue on the face using the Foam Glue. Foam Glue is a special glue that adheres to the foam. It works better for this type of project than normal school glue. You can purchase foam glue from Meijer, Walmart or from online resources for around $3.

Step 5: Cut out a leaf for each of the pumpkins using the green craft foam. You can get more creative and cut out vines and a brown pumpkin stem.

Step 6: Glue on the leaf and/or stem.

How to Make the Witches Hat

Step 7: Draw a circle with a 4″ diameter.

NOTE: Use a large cup to make a perfect circle.

Step 8: Fold the circle in half and cut down the middle.

Step 9: Take one half of the circle and create a cone out of as shown.

Step 10: Staple the cone in place.

Step 11: Cut out a second circle half the diameter (the radius) of the first circle. For the one shown, a 4″ circle was used, so the second circle is 2″ in diameter.

Step 12: Fold the smaller circle in half and cut out the center (for this it was slightly smaller than one inch).

Step 13: Cut small slits (about 1/8″)around the interior of the circle.

Step 14: Slide the smaller circle over the cone and flatten to create the brim of the witches hat.

NOTE: you can decorate the area of the hat where the “teeth” of the brim stand up around the cone. Orange tissue paper, twine, or other materials work well for this.

How to Make the Ghost

Step 15: Using the ball point pen draw several ghost shapes on the white craft foam each 3 to 4 inches tall.

Step 16: Cut out the ghost.

Step 17: Using the Foam Glue, glue the googly eyes to the ghost.

Step 18: Cut out a small mouth for each ghost using black craft foam or simply color an area on the ghost using a fine tipped marker or black ball point pen.

How to Make a Halloween Mobile

After creating each object to dangle from your mobile you will need to create ring to hold all of them. If you don’t have wire cutters or pliers you can simply use the wire hanger as is.

Step 19: Cut off the top of the wire hanger and form the hanger into a circle.

NOTE: Twist the ends of the hanger around the rest of the wire using the pliers.

Step 20: Use fishing line to hang up the ghost.

NOTE: A thick needle works the best to pierce each object without tearing it up.

Step 21: Thread each object with a string and tie it around the metal hanger ring.

Step 22: Cut as many pieces needed of twine in various lengths to hang up the witches hats (one piece per hat).

Step 23: Tie a knot in the end of each piece of twine.

Step 24: Use twine to hang up the witches hats. Simply thread the twine through the small hole at the tip of the cone starting from the inside of the hat and going up with the knot at the bottom of the twine.

Step 25: Tie the other end to the metal loop.

Step 26: Color several pieces of twine green to resemble pumpkin vines.

Step 27: Attach the twin vines to the stem of each pumpkin and tie to the wire loop.

Allow each item to dangle from the loop and adjust length as necessary before trimming the ends of the strings. After attaching all the items you can decorate the loop with ribbon. For this project we used green ribbon to create a loop to hang up the mobile. The project is finished. You can hang it in a front hallway in front of a window or from the ceiling to add Halloween spirit in any room.

Making your own costume can save money and is a terrific activity for children. Taking part in the creation of the costume–coming up with the idea, brainstorming supply ideas, searching for the final touch, can be a good learning experience. This costume is great if you plan to spend a lot of time dressed up or are attending an after trick-or-treat Halloween party. You can transform from the Ghost of Charlie Brown to simply being Charlie Brown. The following will provide you with the simple items for making this costume.

What You Will Need

• Yellow Polo Shirt or T-shirt
• Yellow Socks (optional–white can be used)
• Black Shorts or Pants
• Black Shoes
• Black Fabric Marker or self-stick felt material
• White Sheet (or large piece of white material)
• Scissors

How to Make Charlie Brown’s Outfit

Step 1: Draw or apply a thick zigzag line across the chest of the shirt to resemble that of Charlie Browns shirt. To use the self-stick felt material, cut out a zigzag, remove backing and apply the material to the shirt.

NOTE: You can also purchase a t-shirt from many online retailers including Amazon and 80stees.com The shirts vary in price from $10 to over $30. To keep cost low you could make your own if you don’t plan on wearing it after Halloween. Using the self-stick material will allow the wearer to remove the stripe after Halloween and reuse the yellow shirt.

Making the Ghost of Charlie Brown

Step 2: Take your white sheet or material and drape it over your head. Have a friend help you even it out over your body and gently mark the eye holes.

Step 3: Remove the sheet and cut out the eye holes. On the interior of the sheet mark the eye holes using a marker. Just simply mark around them to help you locate them when putting the sheet on.

Step 4: Remember, in the classic “It’s The Great Pumpkin Charlie Brown,”  by Charles Schulz, Charlie Brown had trouble with the scissors. Be sure to cut several holes throughout the sheet to replicate his mistakes. The circles around the eye holes on the interior of the sheet will keep the eye holes distinguishable from the rest of the holes.

Step 5: Assemble your costume by putting on the shorts, shirt, socks and shoes. Then place the sheet over top of your costume.

NOTE: Adding the Ghost element provides an additional dimension to the costume. If you don’t have a white sheet you can simply go as Charlie Brown. Just don’t be surprised if you end up with a few rocks in your candy bag!

This costume is great because you are dressed up as Charlie Brown’s ghost as in the movie and then if you are attending a party following trick-or-treating you can simply become Charlie Brown. It is also simple to wear because it is basically normal clothing. This makes a great costume for the boy who fusses at just about everything.

This is a simple costume you can create out of things you may already own.  It is great for small children because it is comfortable and it is also a good costume for a cool or cold Halloween night of trick-or-treating. Making the ears and the tail of the cat costume may be the most difficult parts, but can be created without sewing. Here is the basic idea to get you started.

What You Will Need for a Cat or Black Panther

• Matching Sweat Shirt (hooded or regular) and Sweat Pants (Black is the most common color)
• Black face paint or marking pen (eye liner also works well)
• Black Socks (or match your sweat clothes)
• Black, Brown or White Shoes
• Black Ribbon (about 18 inches in length–match your clothes)
• Black felt, Craft Foam or other material to make ears (match your clothes)
• Plastic Head Band
• 3 safety pins or stapler (or you can sew or staple on the ears and tail)
• Scissors

How to Make Cat Costume Ears

Step 1: Cut out two ears large enough to resemble cat ears. The ear should be triangular in shape. Craft foam is pictured here because it is a sturdy material that will stand up on its own to form the ears.

Step 2: Fold the craft foam in half.

Step 3: Cut the foam in half.

Step 4: Cut triangles with the foam folded. Unfolded the ears will be in the shape of a diamond.

NOTE: If you are making a panther costume, the ears of a panther are still in the shape of a triangle, but slightly curved at the top. Simply trim away the top point of the triangle to create a rounded top.

Step 5: Place the ears around the headband and staple the ears together as shown (see Making Mittens Ears Below for more detail).

NOTE: You can also attach the ears to the hood of a sweat shirt or if you do not have a hooded sweat shirt or a black headband you can purchase a set of costume cat ears from a local retailer such as Halloween Express or on line from Shindigz.

How to Make A Cat Costume Tail

Step 6: Create a tail using the black ribbon. If you want a more three dimensional look you can roll up a piece of fabric and glue or sew it in the shape of a tail.

NOTE: The tail should not drag on the ground or weigh too much. This could be a potential tripping hazard as your child goes trick-or-treating.

How to Assemble the Cat Costume

Step 7: Assemble the costume by putting on the pants, shirt and ears. (Apply layers of clothing underneath the outfit if the weather is going to be cold.)

Step 8: Paint a black or pink nose using face paint or eye liner. Apply lines for whiskers and other facial accents.

Step 9:Put on the socks, shoes, and gloves to finish the costume.

NOTE: This process can be simple or as complex as you want. Young children will often do better if the make-up is kept simple and non irritating.

Alternatives: This outfit can be transformed into Mittens from the Disney Pixar hit movie, Bolt (2008) with a few modifications. Simply add white gloves and shoes, and a white tip to the tail. You may also want to add white “fuzzy” material to the chest of the sweat shirt. You can by small remnants from local fabric stores for a fraction of the price and this can be sewn on or simply glued on to the front of the shirt. The left ear of Mittens has a small piece missing, so just add a small triangle cut out of the ear to enhance the look of the costume. You can also add small triangles of pink to the interior of the ears with glue. Mittens nose is pink. You can use heavy blush or lipstick if you don’t have costume makeup.

Making Mittens Ears

Step 1: Cut off small strip of pink craft foam.

Step 2: Cut out triangles to fit in black cat ears.

Step 3: Staple on pink to black ears.

Alternative: Another simple cat idea is to use a hot pink sweat suit and add Cheshire Cat Ears and Tail available at ShinDigz.com to create the purr-fect Cheshire Cat costume. Use costume make up to create the huge devious grin the Alice in Wonderland character is known for.

Creating a cat or black panther costume is simple. Remember to add on glow in the dark accents such as glow bracelets, flash light or light up shoes to prevent accidents. Use caution when crossing streets. This is a great project for young children and it is cost effective. Have fun and be creative when designing your own costumes.

How to Make a Scarecrow Costume

Step 1: Begin by adding “patches” to your jeans. You can use a hot glue gun or needle and thread to sew on the patches. Not many are needed–two or three to make the jeans look worn. Here we used a combination of a sewing machine and sewing by hand.

NOTE: You can use any type of pants such as corduroy, slacks, or jeans.

Step 2: Use the yarn or twine to create the appearance of straw hanging out the ends of the sleeves and pant legs. Simply turn the garments inside out and use a hot glue gun to attach the yarn to the sleeves. You can also sew the yarn to the inside of the sleeves if you do not have a hot glue gun.

Step 3: Allow the items time to dry if you use glue (about 24 hours).

Step 4: Assemble the outfit by putting on the shirt, pants, belt, hat/hood and tying off the bottom of the pant legs.

Step 5: Paint your face white and add “stitching” using a black face paint pencil or eye liner.

NOTE: The face paint is optional and highly inadvisable for small children based on irritation levels making trick-or-treating a bad experience. Keep your child’s costume simple to avoid problems while walking around.

Step 6: Put on the shoes/boots and gloves and your outfit is complete.

Alternatives: Using tan material or a burlap sack you can make a hood for your scarecrow outfit rather than using a straw hat.

How To Make a Burlap Scarecrow Hood

Step 1: Using a burlap sack or tan material, straighten and fold the material with about 18 inches of overlap.

Step 2: Cut off the excess material.

Step 3: Unfold the material and sew a hem in the edge around the face.

Step 4: To sew the hem simply pin the proper amount of material along one side of the material. Use a sewing machine to quickly hem the material.

NOTE: Sewing a him will prevent the material from fraying, but it is not necessary. If you do not have access to a sewing machine you can sew it by hand or simply leave the edge raw.

Step 5: Fold the material inside out and line up the edges.

Step 6: From the front edge of the material move towards the center leaving enough space to form the top of the hood. This distance will vary based on the size of the wearer’s head. It is typically about 9-12 inches.

Step 7: Mark the spot using a pin and pin the fabric together all the way down to the bottom edge.

Step 8: Sew the back of the hood together.

Step 9: Cut off the excess material leaving a quarter inch seem allowance.

Step 10: Turn the hood right side out.

Step 11: Place the hood on the wearer’s head and pinch the fabric together below the chin.

NOTE: The hood should be tight enough not to fall off, but not too tight to make the wearer uncomfortable.

Step 12: Remove the hood from the person and cut two small holes, one on each side, where the fabric was pinched under the chin.

Step 13: Using twin or other rope, attach a piece to each side of the hood securing the rope through the hole.

Step 14: Place the hood on the wearer and tie the two ropes together to form the hood of the scarecrow.

Scarecrows are often associated with fall activities and can be modeled after more famous characters. The costume is flexible and comfortable and can be worn by people of all ages. It can be used for school plays and for costume parties. Have fun and use what you have to create a great Halloween costume!

What You Will Need

• Black clothing–sweat cloths, yoga pants, etc.
• Black material
• Black Ribbons
• Plastic Ninja Sword (or other toy weapon)
• Black boots or shoes
• Black gloves

How to Make a Ninja Costume

Step 1: Assemble the costume by putting on the black long sleeve shirt and long black pants.

Step 2: Use the ribbon to create the appearance of tightly fitting pants from the knees down. Do not tie too tightly as to cut off circulation or to make the wearer uncomfortable. This is optional if you simply want to wear a pair of skinny pants or leave the pants baggy.

Step 3: Create a belt around the waist line using the material. This should resemble a martial arts belt and the ends should be neatly trimmed.

Step 4: Create a hood and sash from the remaining material leaving only the eyes visible. Or you can wear a winter hood with a face mask already attached. Try to find one without any decorations or symbols.

Step 5: Put on shoes and gloves to conceal any reaming parts of the body.

Alternatives: Using all black is traditional of a ninja, but other colors such as red and gold are often seen depicted on Ninjas. Use your imagination to add artwork such as a snake, dragon, or skull on the outside of the material. If the clothes are not going to be used again you can use a material paint available at most craft stores, or use a washable paint if you do not want the painting to stay on the material after Halloween.

Creating a pirate costume is easy and flexible. With the popularity of such films as Disney’s Pirates of the Caribbean, pirate costumes are very popular. Many of the items used such as pants and blouses are already in your closet, or you can purchase cheap ones from your local Goodwill store or other second hand shop. The following will provide you with a simple foundation for creating a pirate costume. You can add details with toys or other items as necessary.

What You Will Need

• Old Pants (ones that can be cut)
• Bandana
• Baggy Shirt such as a White Button Up (could be a woman’s blouse)
• Vest
• Sash, scarf, or long piece of fabric (preferable the same or similar color to the bandana)
• Sword or other pirate objects (gold, chains, skulls, etc.)
• Eye patch (optional)
• Black Boots
• Scissors

How to Make a Pirate Costume

Step 1: Take your pants and cut a zig-zag pattern at the bottom of the legs. Or if you prefer you can simply tuck your pants in the top of your boot. This works best with black pants and tall black boots.

NOTE: If you cut your pants you can wash them to make the cuts less uniform to give them a worn out appearance.

Step 2: Tie the sash/piece of cloth around your waist leaving enough hanging down the side to create the look of a pirate. Here we used a uneven cut piece of red material left over from another project.

Step 3: Lay the bandana flat on a table. Fold the bandana in a large triangle. Take the bandana and place it on your head and tie securely in the back.

NOTE: If you do not have a bandana a large piece of fabric cut into a square can also work. We used more of the leftover red material to create the head covering for this costume.

Step 4: Assemble your costume by putting on the pants, shirt, bandana, and cloth belt.

Step 5: Add accessories such as the eye patch, vest, sword, or make-up to create a pirate image.

The pirate costume is flexible and you can be creative when putting items together. Boys can look rough and rugged and girls can look sexy but strong. The choice is yours.

Making a Pair of Balloon Penguins

Step 1: Blow up one of the black balloons using the pumper leaving about 2 1/2 inches at the end not blown up.

NOTE: Leaving space in the end of the balloon will allow the creator to safely twist and bend the balloon reducing the chance the balloon will pop. There is always the possibility the balloon will pop, so use caution to avoid injury.

Step 2: Tie a knot in the end of the balloon.

NOTE: After you blow up the balloon allow a small amount of air to escape to make tying easier.

The Penguin Body

Step 3: Twist the balloon about 3 inches away from the knot as shown. This is the first step in making the body.

Step 4: Fold over the balloon at the twist and twist again to make the second body segment.

Step 5: Repeat the twist a third time making the third segment the same length as the first and second.

The Penguin Head

Step 6: Create the head by simply folding a small portion of the balloon and twisting the balloon into the end of the body.

Step 7: After creating the head, fold over the balloon again and repeat the twist a fourth time securing the end of the balloon at the base of the body.

NOTE: If too much of the balloon remains after building the body and head, simple remove it by cutting or pinching off the excess. Leave enough balloon to tie off the tail.

The Penguin Chest

Step 8: Blow up the white balloon leaving about one inch from the end of the balloon not blown up. You will use this portion to tie the white balloon to the penguin body.

Step 9: Tie the white balloon around the neck of the penguin using the part of the balloon not blown up.

Step 10: Place the white balloon down the front of the penguin body and twist to create the chest.

Step 11: Release the air from the portion of the balloon not being used for the chest and tie off the balloon to contain the air in the chest.

Step 12: Secure the white balloon to the penguin body and cut off any access as needed.

NOTE: Smaller pieces of the balloon can be reserved to use in other balloon art creations. Tie off one end and blow up the remaining portion as shown in Step 13 for making the feet of the penguin.

The Penguin Feet and Beak

Step 13: Taking a small portion (about two inches) of yellow balloon tie off one end.

Step 14: Carefully blow up the small balloon and tie.

Step 15: Slip the yellow balloon between the white chest and black body.

Step 16: Twist the yellow balloon and adjust the placement of the feet.

Step 18: Tie off and cut a one inch yellow balloon for the beak.

Step 19: Blow up the beak and tie.

Step 20: Secure the beak to the front of the face of the penguin.

To make a second penguin follow steps 1 through 20. One yellow balloon will be enough to make two sets of feet and two beaks.

Creating new objects with balloons is a great deal of fun for children and adults. The trick is to leave enough room for twisting, securing all connections to avoid dismantling, and taking your time even when the item doesn’t come out well on your first attempt.

Making a balloon butterfly takes one and a half balloons and a dragonfly takes two balloons. This is great for parties because it is quick and little girls love butterflies and boys often enjoy the dragonfly. You can also include the insects in a hat for children to wear. The following will show a few simple steps on how to make a butterfly and a butterfly hat and the variations for the dragonfly.

What You Will Need

2 Twisty Balloons of different colors
Air Pump

How to Make the Butterfly Wings

Step 1: Blow up the first balloon nearly all the way leaving only a small tip to use for tying.

Step 2: Tie the ends together (click here to learn how to tie a balloon).

Step 3: The balloon is in the shape of a circle.  Push the knot towards the center of the other side of the circle creating two smaller ovals (same steps as in the balloon flower except you will twist off center).

Step 4: Bend the ovals together and grip slightly to the right of center to keep all parts together.

Step 5: Twist the balloons together to make the wings.

NOTE: Holding the balloon slightly off center in Step 4 will give the butterfly wings its shape of the larger portions on the top and the smaller portions on the bottom of the wings.

Step 6: Straighten out the wings (continue to Step 7a if you are making a butterfly or skip to Step 7b if you are making a hat) .

How to Make the Butterfly Body

Step 7a: Take a twisty balloon and only fill a small portion (about 6 inches) full of air.

NOTE: To make the body of the dragonfly, fill the second balloon over half way with air to make the body longer.

Step 8a: Tie of the portion with air and cut or break off the unused portion (unused part of the balloon can be used for a later project).

Step 9a: Secure the body of the butterfly in the middle section on the wings.

Now you have a completed balloon butterfly or dragonfly!

How to Make a Butterfly Balloon Hat

To make a butterfly balloon hat, follow Steps 1 through 6 above. Then do the following:

Step 7b: Blow the second balloon up all the way to create the hat.

Step 8b: Measure the circumference of the child’s head and twist the balloon at that point creating a circle with a long body sticking out.

Step 9b: Attach the butterfly wings  to the body on the hat towards the top of the body.

NOTE: To make the dragonfly hat, simply attach the wings lower on the body of the hat to make the body appear longer.

Now you have a completed balloon butterfly or dragonfly hat. Be ready, if you make one butterfly hat at a party for little girls, soon they will all be asking for one!

What You Will Need

How to Make a Balloon Flower

Step 1: Choose the right color and gently stretch your balloon.

Step 2: Place the opening of the balloon over the end of the air pump.

NOTE: Often there are bumps on the end of the nozzle on the air pump to help hold the balloon in place, make sure you pull the balloon over these bumps to reduce air loss as you pump up the balloon.

Step 3: Gently fill your balloon with air using your air pump.

Step 4: Tie your balloon by pinching your fingers at the end of the balloon, release a little air.

Then A) wrap the end of your balloon around three fingers and B) cross the balloon between the thumb and balloon. C) Feed the end of the balloon through the loop you have just created and D) pull it tight.

Step 5: Straighten out the balloon to soften it a bit.

How to Make the Stem (also a Sword)

Step 6: Fold your balloon so there are three layers in the middle of the balloon.

Step 7: Twist in the center of the three layers.

Step 8: Straighten out the leaves.

NOTE: To make the sword, concentrate the folds near the bottom of the balloon. This will make the guard of the sword closer to the hand. Make sure to leave enough room (about 5 inches) for the grip.

How to Make the Flower Petals

Step 9: Take another blown up balloon and tie the ends together.

NOTE: Leave a little room at the end of the balloon when you are blowing it up to have a small amount to use for tying.

Step 10: The balloon looks like a circle. Push the knot towards the center of the other side of the circle creating two small ovals.

Step 11: Bend the ovals together and grip in the middle to keep all parts together.

Step 12: Twist in the middle of the ovals to create four flower petals.

Step 13: Place the end of the stem (without the knot) in the center of the petals to create the stigma.

Step 14: Straighten out the petals and the leaves.

Making balloon animals can be a fun hobby or you can use it as your next entertainment at your child’s birthday party. Be creative and work to make up your own way of creating a new animal. Keep lots of balloons on hand because most of the time, nice projects take more than one balloon.
