Harvest festivals, Halloween parties, hay rides, corn mazes, and apple picking are just a few activities available during the Autumn. The change of the weather creates the need to do more before winter arrives and often crops are harvested and communities come together to celebrate. Taking time to enjoy the cool, fall weather, the community activities, and the lasting memories can make childhood seem to last forever. Here are few ideas to get you started on weekend ideas for the coming months.

Tips for Enjoying Autumn

Tip 1: Look at your local newspaper or search online to find events and happenings in your area. These are often published on Thursday to encourage greater attendance. Look for:

Apple Picking

Boo at the Zoo

City Ghost Tours

Corn Mazes

Costume Contest

Dinners and Socials

Farmers Market Special Events

Free Church Harvest Festivals

Haunted Houses

Hay Rides

Local Food Festivals

Music Events

Parades

Pumpkin Patch

School Functions

Trick-or-Treat at the Children’s Museum

Tip 2: Call in advance to confirm times and if special reservations are required. During the week many operations may close down for public events and only offer group sessions. This may be true for hay rides, corn mazes, haunted houses, and other events where the majority of customers attend on Friday, Saturday or Sunday.

Tip 3: Look for free events to attend. If your family is strapped don’t miss out on the fun of the season. Attending free events can be just as fun and you can meet many new people. Churches, schools, and other community organizations will provide free harvest festivals and socials to encourage people in the community to check out their organization or as a way to fulfill their service goals for the community.

Tip 4: Dress appropriately and remain flexible. Many areas of the country are prone to colder nights and rain during the fall season. Don’t let your evening events get spoiled because you were too cold. You may have to reschedule an event if the weather is to wet for the rides or party to commence.

Tip 5: Have fun! If you have children remind yourself that you can have more fun by watching their delighted faces as they choose the perfect pumpkin, eat a sweet treat, or watch a creative Halloween parade.

Take time to enjoy Autumn with your family and friends. Many communities offer free or inexpensive activities encouraging people to have fun. Winter will be here before you know it and the weather may not be conducive to outdoor fun.

Do you have any tips or suggestions? Feel free to list your local community event below. Please include date, time, location, and cost.

Going out for trick-or-treating is fun for many children and adults. The evening is often filled with tromping around the neighborhood in costume, getting candy and treats from all the neighbors, and going home to over indulge in the sweet delight of the evening’s bounty. Preparing for many Halloween visitors can be an difficult task if you have not had the experience before. People who live in a cul-de-sac often have more guest than those who live on the end of a street or near a busy intersection. Safety is a concern for many parents and staying in well lit areas with fewer cars is essential to keep children safe and sound. Here are a few tips to make Halloween night a fun event for all and tips to help you prepare for all of the trick-or-treaters.

Preparing for Halloween

Step 1: Light up your house. If you are planning on giving out treats you should have your porch light on. This lets others know you are participating in the holiday. If the weather is nice you may want to plan to sit outside to welcome visitors as they trek around the neighborhood. Adding additional lighting to make a safe and welcome environment for children as darkness falls is also helpful.

Step 2: Have plenty of treats. Candy is typical of what is handed out, but you can also hand out trinkets such as plastic Halloween rings, pencils, cards, money, or stickers. Other items we have received include crackers, pretzels, nuts, raisins, popcorn balls, and Play-Doh. Full size candy bars are fun, but not necessary. You can purchase inexpensive items to hand out from Meijer or Shindigz.

Step 3: Decorate your home and yard. Decorating adds to the excitement of the night. Fake gravestones, scary dummies, and jack-o-lanterns are all perfect for the holiday. Other things you can do to add excitement include building a fake coffin and have a person lay inside of it dressed up as Dracula. As trick-or-treaters come close have the person sit up and scare the children and other unexpected “scary” decorations.

Step 4: Plan to have someone at your home to hand out candy. If you have small children you may not be able to walk a far distance, but if your children are older you may be out longer. Plan to have one of the family members stay home to pass out candy while the other person walks around with the trick-or-treaters. You can also invite grandparents or other relatives to come over to hand out candy at your house while you take your children out.

Step 5: Practice your trick-or-treat route. Starting a week or two before Halloween, start walking around your neighborhood. Determine how far your child can walk and how long it will take. Then you can plan on handing out candy for the first hour and then walking for the second hour on the evening your community host trick-or-treat. This will allow both parents to go trick-or-treating and still hand out candy.

Have fun handing out treats to the little pirates, princesses, and goblins. Providing options can help those who cannot eat certain items such as peanuts to have fun on this evening of ghoulish fun by receiving non edible items.

Happy Halloween!!

Halloween is a multi-billion dollar business with Americans expected to spend close to two billion this year. Candy, costumes, decorations, pumpkins, party accessories, events, and more this children’s holiday has evolved into a grand party where collecting a few pieces of candy is simply not enough. The history of this holiday is often skewed and forgotten, but the basis is routed in traditional harvest celebrations and is closely related to All Hallows Even or the night before the mass-day of saints and All Souls’ Day (November 1 and 2 respectively). The tradition of trick-or-treating has evolved from the poor going from house to house asking for food in return of prayers for the dead to a fun night of mischief for any and all ages to participate in. The following will provide several ideas on homemade costumes that will help keep cost low, but increase creative thinking and ingenuity.

How to Create a Costume for Halloween

One night events for children often cost the most such as prom dresses, homecoming gowns, and for Halloween costumes. Many store bought costumes can range from $10 up to $100 or more depending on the realism of the costume. Costumes can be purchased at such places as Meijer or from online at Shindigz. To save money you can simple create your own costume using items from home or reduce the cost by combining items you already have with small accessories you buy.

Originally costumes focused on supernatural figures such as monsters, ghost, ghouls, witches, and devils, but have also include fictional characters, Presidents, celebrities, and other well-known or popular icons from the recent past. Many children like to dress up like pirates, princesses, or Ninjas and it may be based on the ease of creating such costumes for little cost. Here are a few costume ideas that take items from around your house or for a small purchase to create a great look.

Simple Costume Ideas

Here are a few ideas to get you thinking about what you have and what you can create for a terrific Halloween Costume:

Cat or Black Panther

Pirate

Scarecrow

Ninja

Charlie Brown Dressed as a Ghost

Princess

The items needed for most of these costumes are simple such as sweat pants and a sweat shirt, old jeans, face paint, material remnants (small pieces of material), scissors, glue, or staples. Taking what you have around the house can help reduce the cost of Halloween, but still allow your child (or you) to enjoy the traditions of such a fun holiday.

Do you have any suggestions for making or creating a cool Halloween costume? What have you planned for this year or what have you made in the past? Feel free to post a comment or suggestion for our readers.

<img class="aligncenter size-full wp-image-6692" title="Mickey's Boo To You! Attending special events at Walt Disney locations around the globe provide guest with unique experiences and new excitement. At Walt Disney World in Orlando, Florida guest can share the excitement and joy of Halloween at Mickey’s Not-So-Scary Halloween Party at the Magic Kingdom. The event host special character greetings, fireworks display, and Mickey’s Boo To You! Halloween Parade. Attending early to find the best seating location is a must. The following will provide a few tips on viewing the parade and what to expect.

Mickey’s Boo To You! Halloween Parade

Special event ticket purchases are required to attend the Mickey’s Not-So-Scary Halloween Party. The party runs from mid September through the end of October at Disney’s Magic Kingdom. The parade is schedule for two show times most evenings during the event to eliminate the crowds and provide a greater amount of time to enjoy the other attractions and events.

Tip 1: Reserve your spot early. Many people agree the best place to view the parade is in front of Cinderella’s Castle. This will provide access to a great view of the fireworks following the first parade. Make sure if you have small children you reserve a “front row seat” along the parade route. Often other guest will be sitting before the parade and then stand during the parade blocking the view if you are behind them.

NOTE: Clear the street early as the parade is preceded with a ride by the Headless Horseman!

Tip 2: Set your camera on night shot or multi shot to capture all of the action. The parade is a quick moving parade with lots of dancing and fun songs to accompany the floats.

Tip 3: Discuss the scary floats before the parade begins. Although the music is lively and “Not-So-Scary” some of the costumes may seem a bit real for young children. The floats based on the Haunted Mansion may be the scarcest for little ones, so be prepared.

Tip 4: Have your trick-or-treat bag ready to receive candy. The Goofy Candy Co. is the last segment of the parade and treats are handed out to children along the parade route.

Tip 5: Check with a Cast Member to find out if a second parade is scheduled for the night you are attending. The second parade is often less crowded. This allows you and your family to enjoy more of the park, trick-or-treating and then you can end your evening watching the parade. Remember, there is only one fireworks display, so don’t miss the Happy HalloWishes where villains go trick-or-treating in the sky!

The parade is filled with many familiar characters such as Captain Jack Sparrow, Mickey and Minnie Mouse, Peter Pan, Captain Hook, and others. The floats are often focused on the darker side of Disney with the villains, ghost, and other Halloween related characters being showcased. The parade is specific to Mickey’s Not-So-Scary Halloween Party and it is an event you’re not going to want to miss.

Celebrating the holidays at Walt Disney World enhance the splendor and fun people of all ages can experience. During the Halloween season Americans are expected to spend billions on the holiday purchasing candy, costumes, party supplies, and decorations. Many families will spend over $50 on costumes and around $50 on candy. One alternative (or addition depending on how much you enjoy the holiday) to typical trick-or-treating is attending the annual Mickey’s Not-So-Scary Halloween Party at Disney’s Magic Kingdom at the Walt Disney World Resort in Orlando, Florida.

How to Prepare For Mickey’s Not-So-Scary Halloween Party

Step 1: The first step if you are not a local in Orlando is to plan your vacation during the special event time frame. Mickey’s Not-So-Scary Halloween Party usually runs from mid September through the end of October.

Step 2: Once your visit is planned you will need to purchase tickets. Purchasing tickets in advance will save visitors around $6 per ticket. This is $24 for a family of four or equivalent to four “Mickey Ice Cream Bars” in the park.

Step 3: Choose the right costume. Even though the park is only open to guest who have made special event ticket purchases, the rides and attractions are still open for those guest. Choose a costume that will allow you to enjoy the thrills of the Magic Kingdom along with the special event activities.

Mickey’s Not-So-Scary Halloween Party Costume Ideas

Many visitors wear Disney themed costumes such as Buzz Lightyear, Tinker Bell, or Minnie Mouse, but it isn’t necessary. Since it is a family oriented event for guest of all ages, Disney request costumes remain in good taste and encourage the avoidance of gory or extra scary costumes. Here are some helpful tips for costume ideas:

Tip 1: Bibbidi Bobbidi Boutique (located at Downtown Disney or in Cinderella’s Castle at Magic Kingdom–reservations required) is a great way to dress your little princess up for the big night. This is a salon where little girls are transformed into their favorite princess in a matter of minutes from hair to make-up and can even include a princess dress. Although cost range from $50 up to nearly $200 it may be out of budget for many guest. For an alternative, simply style your daughter’s hair and purchase a princess dress before you arrive. This will save on cost and time prior to the party.

Tip 2: Join the Pirates League! This is a great way to get the whole family involved in the Halloween event. Perfect for boys or girls and men or women the cost per person is around $30. Each individual receives a pirate name, facial effects such as a beard or mustache, bandana, earring and eye patch, sword and sheath, temporary tattoo, pirate coin necklace, removable teeth or bold makeup, nail polish and face gems (items may vary). It is a great way to get into the celebration with very little added cost. An alternative would be to create your own pirate costume prior to your vacation. This attraction is located in Magic Kingdom, so plan accordingly. Reservations are highly recommended.

Tip 3: Purchase a costume from a local store such as Meijer, Kroger, or Halloween Express and wear it to the party. You can also skip the costume if you would rather enjoy the party and rides in normal clothing. Most adults were not in costume, but the majority of children were.

Tip 4: In lieu of a costume, but still in the spirit of Halloween, some guest choose to get their faces painted. The cost in the parks is around $15 and it minimizes the need to pack costumes or accessories if you are flying to Walt Disney World. If this is your choice, make sure to buy a Park Hopper Pass for your stay and visit Animal Kingdom (Dino Land) or Epcot (World Showcase/Trading Post/Africa) to have your face painted.

NOTE: Currently Magic Kingdom does not offer face painting on the premises while Toon Town is under construction (reopening in 2012). The makeup used for the face painting is professional costume makeup and is non-irritating. After the makeup dries it will stay on your face for days if you let it. It can be washed off with water and a little rubbing so be careful if you decide to take on Splash Mountain! In previous years free face painting was offered in the Magic Kingdom during the event. This may return once Toon Town is reopened.

Step 4: Arrive early. If the event begins at 7 pm make sure to arrive at Magic Kingdom before 6 pm. This will give your family ample time to get adjusted to the park, get a trick-or-treat bag, and locate all of the Goofy Candy Co. spots. Other guest will be leaving the park if they did not purchase special event tickets. This makes for a crowded entry way upon your arrival. Arriving early will also allow you to get a Quick Service meal for dinner, grab a front row seat for the Mickey’s “Boo-to-You” Halloween Parade, or ride a few times on Space Mountain.

NOTE: A wrist band is provided to guest who have purchased special event tickets. This allows guest to ride the rides, collect treats, and take photos at Character greetings. Without a wrist band you can watch the parade and fireworks, but won’t be able to purchase or do anything else in the park.

Step 5: Pick a few candy spots to hit. If you wait to hit the spots later on you will receive more candy, but don’t wait too late because they do stop handing out candy around 9 pm. One of the best places to collect candy is near Splash Mountain. When you enter Magic Kingdom head to Frontier Land (left of the castle) and begin collecting candy in the back of the park. You can avoid many of the lines with this approach.

Step 6: Ride rides, watch shows, meet-and-great with your favorite characters, and watch the Happy HalloWishes fireworks display while snacking on your Halloween Candy.

Step 7: If you are enjoying the event with your little ones, you may want to make your way to the transportation about an hour early. Since the event closes at midnight, many guest may want to make their way to an extended hours park, Downtown Disney, or back to their resort. This will create a backlog at the bus and tram stations. Avoid the crowd by getting to the stop early and catching the first or second bus departing.

Attending special events while visiting the Walt Disney World Resort in Orlando, Florida can create lasting memories. The Mickey’s Not-So-Scary Halloween Party is a great addition to any WDW vacation.

What are your favorite Mickey’s Not-So-Scary Halloween Party memories? Feel free to share your thoughts and recommendations about attending this special event.

Many churches, schools, and youth groups organize Easter Egg hunts in the spring, but this can be a daunting task if you have many children expected to attend. Here are a few tips to make the egg hunting fun and enjoyable for all in attendance.

Step 1: Request donations for the goodies and plastic eggs. If your organization cannot afford to purchase all the required plastic eggs and treats, request donations about one month in advance. Do this through email, fliers, and advertisements in the facility such as the YMCA or church. Request bulk candy that is individually wrapped or coins to fill the eggs.

Step 2: Fill the eggs and prepare for the big day. Filling the eggs is a tedious task that may take longer than expected. Expect to fill about 10 eggs per child or 1000 for every 100 children. Plan to fill the eggs with age appropriate goodies to include candy, stickers, religious items, or money. Ask for volunteers on several different days and times to ensure all eggs are filled and ready to go.

NOTE: You can purchase prefilled eggs from Walmart, Meijer, and Walgreens to save time. You can also incorporate a raffle with the egg hunt by simply collecting donation for bikes, scooters, movie tickets, or restaurant gift certificates from local merchants. Stuff the eggs with winning prize tickets (one per prize) rather than candy or money.

Step 3: If the event is a free community activity to raise awareness of your organization then advertise. Hang fliers around the community, signs along streets, and use word-of-mouth invites to increase attendance. If the event is only for those in your organization then plan to advertise internally at meetings and other functions prior to the egg hunt.

Step 4: Make alternative plans in the event of inclement weather and include this information on the advertisements. This could be a one day postponement or an alternative inside location.

Step 5: Clearly mark the egg hunting site. If many different age groups will be present then you can section of the grounds for different age groups. This will reduce the chance for injury of smaller children and increase enjoyment for all in attendance. Suggested age groups would be 4 and under, 5-7 year olds, 8-11 year olds, 12 and over. There are often more children in the 5-11 year old groups, make sure to distribute more eggs in these areas.

NOTE: If the organization is small then breaking down the groups by age may not be necessary. Determine what needs to be done by the number of children expected to participate in the egg hunt.

Step 6: Request volunteers to set out the eggs, keep children out of the hunting are until the event officially begins and to monitor the event to prevent mishaps.

Step 7: Announce rules prior to the egg hunt. Remind children not to push or shove to get to the eggs.

Step 8: Release the children to hunt for the eggs. Some hunts limit the number of eggs where other hunts are a free for all. Either way, stick to rules and make sure the children understand what they can and cannot due.

Tips for Success

Make sure to have enough eggs to make the event exciting for the children.

Try not to have less than 10 eggs per expected child.

Provide bags or advertise for participants to bring a bag or basket for collecting eggs.

Register children prior to the start of the event for later contact if you are recruiting for your organization.

Purchase fun Easter goodies online from Shindigz, Orange Onions, or Silly Bandz if you want to avoid all of the sugary treats.

Have fun and enjoy the Easter excitement! And if you are really up for the feat you can serve refreshments such as punch and cookies following the hunt.

Do you have any suggestions on organizing an Easter Egg Hunt? What are your favorite goodies to place in the eggs? Feel free to post comments or suggestions.

Step 8: Color clean, hard boiled eggs in the color baths.

Step 9: Once the eggs are colored, let the dye dry completely before applying the shiny accents.

NOTE: The longer the eggs are left in the dye baths the brighter and darker the color will be. This will also allow more dye to permeate the shell and color the white of the egg. The eggs are still edible even thought they have coloring on them.

Step 10: Once the egg is completely dry, apply a small amount of accent glue on the egg.

Step 11: Spread the glue around with the tip of your finger and allow the glue to dry slightly.

NOTE: The glue needs to be very sticky. Do not rush this portion of the project. The shiny accent will not stick unless the glue is very tacky. Use the glue sparingly to get a better result with the shiny accents.

Step 12: Apply the color accent with the color facing away from the egg.

Step 13: Rub the area where the shiny accent sheet meets the egg and allow to set slightly.

Step 14: Rip the shiny accent sheet away from the egg to leave small pieces behind.

NOTE: Really pull the sheet away from the egg to make the project work. If the glue is not sticky enough then the shiny accent will not stick to the egg.

Step 15: Repeat the process until the entire egg is covered with shiny accents.

NOTE: You can use two different accent colors on the same egg to achieve a unique look to the eggs.

This product was very messy, but the eggs looked terrific. After learning the proper technique of ripping the shiny accent away from the egg and allowing the glue to become sticky the end product was very similar to what was shown on the package.

Tip 1: Don’t apply too much glue to the eggs. Allow time enough for the glue to become sticky.

Tip 2: Wash the eggs before pealing them. This prevents the transfer of the color and accents on to the edible egg.

Tip 3: Have another activity to do while the glue is drying. This activity did not hold the attention span of the children because of the down time during the process.

PROS of the Easter Unlimited™ Bright & Shiny Egg Decorating Kit

Overall the outcome of this kit was what the company portrayed on the package. The bright and shiny accents made very unique eggs and were eye catching.

CONS of the Easter Unlimited™ Bright & Shiny Egg Decorating Kit

The biggest problem was the amount of time it took between stages in the process. Children want things to stay active and go quickly. This is a good lesson in patients and “good things come to those who wait.” The project was also quite messy. You may want to consider wearing plastic gloves to avoid some of the mess, but it is not necessary since all of the dye and glue come off easily with soap and water.

Each Easter Egg coloring kit provides a different look to the eggs. You can find a wide assortment of kits at Meijer, Walmart, and Walgreens along with other local establishments. The Easter Unlimited™ Pearlescent Kit contains 5 colors of shimmering paint applied using a bag and color dropper. The paints are pastel colors perfect for celebrating the Easter Season. The following will provide a visual guide for coloring Easter Eggs using the Easter Unlimited™ Pearlescent Easter Eggs Kit, a few tips from lessons learned, and the pros and cons about the kit. You will need about one dozen hard boiled eggs for this project.

Step 1: Prepare the work area by covering a table with newspaper.

Step 2: Set up an egg drying station with a baking rack and paper towels.

Step 3: Open the box and empty out the contents of the Pearlescent Egg coloring kit.

Step 4: Separate the dye packets from one another on the perforated lines.

Step 5: Using your fingers, knead the paint inside the packages thoroughly mixing the paint before opening the packages.

Step 6: Cut open each dye packet one at a time and empty contents into coloring palette.

Step 7: Discard empty dye packets to prevent the spread of dye on unwanted surfaces.

Step 8: Prepare a coloring bag by shaping the bag like a nest to hold the egg.

NOTE: The directions on the package indicated a painting glove was included rather than the bags. The kit I purchased came with four bags and we supplemented a fifth bag for the fifth color. The bags can be used multiple times for the same color.

Step 9: Place a clean, cooled, hard boiled egg in the coloring bag shaped like a nest.

Step 10: Using the color droppers, suck up some of the dye by squeezing the dropper, inserting the tip slightly into the dye, and then releasing the squeeze.

Step 11: Apply a few drops of the color onto the egg.

Step 12: Pull the bag up around the egg to form a barrier between the egg and your hands.

Step 13: Using your fingers, smear the dye all over the egg making swirling motions to cover all parts of the shell.

Step 14: Carefully place the egg in the color palette drying area to dry.

Step 15: Repeat the process until all the eggs are colored.

This product was a great deal of fun for the whole family. The hands on coloring of the eggs was fun and entertaining.

Tip 1: Don’t put too much coloring on your eggs. Use about 3 to 4 total drops.

Tip 2: If you do end up with too much dye, allow your dye to dry slightly and then wipe of the excess with a DRY paper towel.

Tip 3: Apply several coats of the dye to make a darker egg. Allow each coat to dry before applying more.

Pros of the Easter Unlimited™ Pearlescent Egg Coloring Kit

This was a very simple way of making the eggs beautiful. The paint shimmers adding sparkle and shine to the finished product. Since this requires hands on involvement the children stayed interested in the project and wanted to paint all of the eggs.

If you purchase extra sandwich bags from Meijer or Walmart you can paint several dozen eggs with this kit making a perfect option for group settings.

Cons of the Easter Unlimited™ Pearlescent Egg Coloring Kit

The major drawback for this kit was the missing bags and dropper. We had to supplement from home to make sure we could use every color of dye. The dye easily transferred after being refrigerated. Simply rinse before pealing to reduce transfer to the edible egg.

Do you have any suggestions or comments concerning Pearlescent Coloring Kits? What was your experience like? How does this type of kit compare to the ones you have used in the past? Feel free to post questions or comments.

To make brilliant Easter Eggs using a tie dye egg coloring kit is an easy process even children can have doing. The Easter Unlimited™ Tie Dye Egg Coloring Kit comes with 5 “Super Bright Liquid Dyes”, 5 color droppers, coloring bags and palette, and 6 cardboard egg stands. The following will provide simple steps to follow for using the Tie Dye Egg Coloring kit. You will need about one dozen hard boiled eggs for this project.

Step 1: Prepare the work area by covering a table with newspaper.

Step 2: Set up an egg drying station with a baking rack and paper towels.

Step 3: Open the box and empty out the contents of the Tie Dye Egg coloring kit.

Step 4: Separate the dye packets from one another on the perforated lines.

Step 5: Cut open each dye packet one at a time and empty contents into coloring palette.

Step 6: Discard empty dye packets to prevent the spread of dye on unwanted surfaces.

Step 7: Prepare a coloring bag by shaping the bag like a nest to hold the egg.

NOTE: Plastic sandwich bags can be used as coloring bags. Reusing the bags will cause the colors to blend and look brown.

Step 8: Place a clean, cooled, hard boiled egg in the coloring bag shaped like a nest.

Step 9: Using the color droppers, suck up some of the dye by squeezing the dropper, inserting the tip slightly into the dye, and then releasing the squeeze.

Step 10: Apply a few drops of the color onto the egg.

NOTE: Only use a few drops (about 4) per egg of each color. More will result in too much dye for the egg.

Step 11: Pull the bag up around the egg to form a barrier between the egg and your hands.

Step 12: Using your fingers, smear the dye all over the egg making swirling motions to cover all parts of the shell.

Step 13: Carefully place the egg in the color palette drying area to dry.

Step 14: Repeat the process until all the eggs are colored.

NOTE: Only use a max of three colors per egg or the result will be a brown egg.

This product was a great deal of fun for the whole family. Using extra bags allowed us to switch colors and color more eggs than what was originally provided by the company. The dye can be easily cleaned with water.

Tip 1: Don’t put too much coloring on your eggs. Use about 6 to 8 total drops.

Tip 2: If you do end up with too much dye, allow your dye to dry slightly and then wipe of the excess with a DRY paper towel.

Tip 3: If you don’t like how the egg looks you can use a WET paper towel to wash most of the dye off and recolor the egg.

Pros of the Easter Unlimited™ Tie Dye Egg Coloring Kit

The colors were bright and the process was simple. The children liked this kit because of the amount of hands-on involvement from start to finish. There was very little down time with this kit and the results were very pretty eggs.

This kit could be combined with other egg coloring kits to create unique Easter Eggs. Simply dye the entire egg using another kit such as the PAAS® Classic Easter Egg Decorating kit, allow the egg to dry completely and then add a tie dye effect to the egg with the Easter Unlimited™ Tie Dye Egg Coloring Kit.

Eggs were easy to peal and had minimal dye soaking through to the eggs Albumen (whites)

Cons of the Easter Unlimited™ Tie Dye Egg Coloring Kit

The kit only came with a few bags. An attempt to conserve the bags by rinsing them and reusing them failed to provide immediate results since the dye is water soluble. The bags needed to be completely dry to perform as expected.

Dye easily transferred from the egg to other surfaces after being refrigerated.

NOTE: Before pealing the eggs to eat, rinse in cold water to remove some of the dye. This will help to reduce the amount of dye transferred from the egg to your hands.

What was your experience like? How does this type of kit compare to the ones you have used in the past? Feel free to post questions or comments.

Coloring Easter Eggs is a great tradition to share with your children even if you are not very religious. Welcoming Spring and the rebirth of the world around us is exciting and new for young children. Many products can be purchased to color eggs, although they are not all created equally. The following will review a few products easily found at Meijer, Walmart, or Walgreens along with other local grocery stores. Each product provided a myriad of colors and an enjoyable activity for the season.

Easter Unlimited™ Tie Dye Egg Coloring Kit

The Tie Dye kit provided a fun way to color the eggs. The kit included 5 bright colors to interchange to make more colors. The basic colors were yellow, blue, red, green, and purple. By using a different combination of drops on the eggs the colors would blend and make additional colors. For example an egg with red and yellow would also include orange on the final product, a red and blue egg would include purple on the finished product, and green and yellow would include lime green on the final tie dyed egg. The process was easy and not as messy as expected. Children liked the direct involvement with the egg coloring rather than simply waiting on the eggs to finish being colored in the solution.

Easter Unlimited™ Bright & Shiny Egg Decorating Kit

The Bright & Shiny kit made a very different look to the eggs. This kit involved dying the eggs, allowing them to dry, then placing a special glue (included in package) on the exterior of the egg, allowing it time to become sticky, then using an “accent” sheet to transfer the foil like shiny colors to the exterior of the egg. The eggs came out really pretty with this product, but the process was slower than the children liked and very messy.

Easter Unlimited™ Pearlescent Easter Eggs

The Pearlescent kit came with 5 colors to choose from. The colors included purple, blue, yellow and green, but the final outcome was not quite as brilliant as the colors displayed on the box. The dye was really shiny and made the eggs very pretty, but more pastel in final color even when applied several times to the eggs. Not as messy as expected, but the children were more impressed with blending the colors rather than keeping the eggs solid peralescent colors.

Dudley’s® Egg Decoating Kit Glitter Magic

This kit was nice and provided variety to simply coloring the eggs. The glitter applied to the eggs was messy as glitter always is, but the kit allowed the children to be creative and involved in the process of decorating. The kit comes with five dyes and three colors of glitter.

PAAS®Classic Easter Egg Decorating Kit

Keeping the tradition simple with the Classic Egg coloring kit is the easiest way to color eggs. The kit comes with nine dyes providing the most variety of all the kits. Simple to follow instructions with very few drawbacks. Keeping young children interested in the coloring may need to be accomplished with rules for one egg at a time where the child must keep close watch over their egg to ensure the proper color is attained.

Finding the right kit will come down to personal choice. What is your favorite Easter Egg coloring memory? What is your favorite color? Feel free to post a message or comment on how you plan for Easter; we would love to hear from you.
