How to Beat the Heat

Beating the heat is something people have struggled with for ages. The higher the temperatures rise the less people want and can do. So how can we beat the heat? Swimming, playing in the sprinkler, or staying in the A.C. are all options, but not for everyone. Here are a few tips when you are going to be out in the heat.

How to Beat the Heat

1.) Stay hydrated. If you are not hydrated then your body cannot work properly to cool itself through perspiration. Begin your day with a large glass of water. This will promote a healthy start to the day and provide you with a baseline for staying hydrated all day. Then as you work or play in the heat, make sure you are consuming plenty of fluids–not simply water, but include sports drinks, lemonade, or other non carbonated products to ensure you are replenishing lost salts. Plan on taking a drink at least once every 15 minutes in extremely hot weather or if you are working or exercising vigorously enough to sweat. Purchase these products in large quanties at stores like Meijer, or Walgreens to reduce the price per bottle. Pack a cooler with ice and drinks to provide you easy access to cold drinks while you are out in the heat.

2.) Wear light-weight clothing. Companies are producing new types of clothing that block harmful UV rays. Columbia Sportswear Company produces clothing that works to repel the sun’s harsh rays to help keep you cooler longer. Also choose clothing that is light in color so the heat from the sun is not absorbed through the dark colors.

3.) Stay in the shade. Walking in the shaded areas may take a little longer to get from point A to point B, but in the long run you will stay cooler longer. This will provide you with greater energy to accomplish all of the things you expect to do in the day. This is a great tip if you are in an amusement park and the sun is simply relentless. If you are not in an area with a lot of shade, carry your own. Either wear a large brimmed hat or carry an umbrella. This will reduce the heat around you throughout your walk.

4.) Take a cool shower. Showering off in the morning can reduce your temperature before you go outside. Then when you return from working or exercising, take another shower to refresh your body and to cool yourself off. In the middle of the day, take a break and wash your exposed areas such as your face, neck, and arms with cool, clear water. This can help you to reduce the heat your body is experiencing.

5.) Circulate the air. If you do not have the option for staying in the air conditioning, keep the air moving. Using fans to help circulate the air, even when you are outside, can help to reduce the temperature around you. If your work area permits you to bring a personal fan with you to work, do so and enjoy the breeze.
