How to Cut a Watermelon

Summer is here again and watermelons are back in mass at your local grocery stores (Meijer, Krogers, Sam’s Club). For many, the fruit often invokes memories of childhood summers, picnics, and fun, but for those of you who have not had the pleasure of enjoying this sweet delicious treat, here is a quick how to on slicing one up!

What You Will Need

1 Watermelon

Paper Towels

Cutting Board

Sharp Knife

Storage Container

Preparing a Watermelon

Step 1: Wash the outside of the melon by running water over it and/or wiping it off with a damp towel.

Step 2: Place paper towels on your counter underneath a large cutting board. This will catch the juice run-off and make clean-up easier.

Step 3: Using a large sharp knife, insert the tip of the knife into the center of the watermelon.

Step 4: With the knife inserted in the melon, slice down the side.

Step 5: Then, carefully roll the melon away from you, slicing the melon in half as you go.

Step 6: Take half of the melon and cut it in half (now this section is in quarters).

Step 7: Cut each fourth into an eighth of the melon.

Step 8: Carefully cut slices that resemble a triangle for easy enjoyment.

NOTE: The fruit can be cut completely from the rind and cubed. It is great for breakfast, as a refreshing snack, for use in fruit bouquets, or you can add it to fruit salads. Store in an air-tight container for up to a week in the refrigerator.
